Horror Movie
by Paul Tremblay

Not one of my favorites of his. I really didn’t like reading a book within a book in this case (I generally do not mind but I didn’t like it here). I think the plot of this book didn’t really make much sense to me nor did I like the main character. The ending was just too bizarre too.

I thought that I would like this more than I did. I liked reading from the viewpoint of Lily more than Matthew. Although the plot of this story kind of reminded me of Crazy Rich Asians.

The Familiar
by Leigh Bardugo

I love Leigh Bardugo, but I think this was my least favorite book of hers. Because this takes place during the Spanish Inquisition, it requires a lot of background knowledge to understand they “why” behind a lot of the gears that propels the story forward. Without that, it’s hard to connect to. The book does pick up and I started to like/dislike/forgive characters, but it wasn’t towards the end that it happened.

Divine Rivals captured me from the second I started reading to when I finished the book not even a day later.

The story kept me engaged and kept me guessing. I’d recommend this book for someone who enjoys psychological thrillers.

Difficult Conversations: How to Discuss What Matters Most
by Douglas Stone

Many helpful suggestions of becoming a better communicator and tips for how to approach difficult conversations of many types. I felt like there could have been fewer (or maybe just less detailed) examples and more summaries, but the information was helpful.

In A Sunburned Country By Bill Bryson

I love Bill Bryson and this book did not disappoint. It is funny, informative and a great travelogue rolled up in one. I can easily imagine Australia in its many configurations. The descriptions of cities, national parks, the outback and tiny towns make you feel like you are there. The author also highlights people across the continent from city dwellers to small town people to aborigines. This was a great book.

Easy good read. SJM does a really nice job of hooking you in for the last 100 pages. She never disappoints. Excited to see where this new story line goes

Every Time I go on Vacation, Someone Dies
by Catherine Mack

A quick and easy read that's part murder mystery, part comedy, with a dash of romance. Set in Italy, author Eleanor Dash is on a book tour with her sister/manager, her ex and book character Connor, her ex Oliver, and a host of other acquaintances/colleagues when it becomes clear that a member of their traveling group is planning to kill her, or Connor, or both of them. It's a twisty, funny, romp of a book; fun beach read.

World of Wonders: In Praise of Fireflies, Whale Sharks, and Other Astonishments

A staff pick and a beautifully written short book by poet Aimee N. While not poems, the short stories written about flora and fauna are poetic in nature. The author picks specific subjects that have meaning in her life and intertwines scientific facts with stories about her family as well as about world issues. The stories about the Potoo and the Octopus were favorites.
